    ETTSA welcomes new UK standards and reiterates calls for harmonisation of consumer protection standards at EU level. 

    The European Technology and Travel Services Association (ETTSA) is one of the leading supporters of transparency, fair competition and choice for travellers. This is why several ETTSA Members constructively took part in the cooperative process initiated by the CMA - the Competition and Markets Authority in the UK - which resulted in the creation of these new UK standards to be applied as of September 1st, 2019. ETTSA fully supports the end goal of looking for better ways to serve consumers.

  • German court confirms that narrow parity clauses are necessary to ensure a fair and balanced exchange of services and are fully compliant with EU competition rules

    ETTSA welcomes the decision of the German court as another evidence that narrow most favoured nation (MFNs) clauses are pro competition and are an important tool for companies to defend investments against free-riding and to create efficiencies for consumers. The recently adopted Platforms-to-Business regulation equally confirms the justification and compliance of such clauses with EU law. ETTSA calls on Member States that still apply unjustified restrictions on these clauses to lift them now.

  • ETTSA supports ECTAA antitrust complaint against IATA

    On Friday 24 May 2019, the European Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Association (ECTAA) filed a complaint with the European competition authority against the airline trade association IATA for abuse of dominant position.  ETTSA fully supports the pledge, which is aligned with its own complaint before the EU antitrust authority, dating from December 2018, requesting an immediate address of discriminatory practices of dominant airlines, and in particular of Lufthansa.

    ETTSA and VIR (Verband Internet Reisevertrieb), the German association representing the digital travel industry, have filed a joint complaint with the European Commission’s antitrust authority (DG COMP) for abuse of dominance by Lufthansa Group concerning discriminatory and exclusionary practices against independent distributors of airline tickets, including global distribution systems (GDSs) and their travel agency users.

  • ETTSA welcomes Digital Single Market package but cautions European Commission to guard against national fragmentation and barriers to trade for the provision of travel services

    Brussels, 26 May 2016 – The European Technology and Travel Services Association (ETTSA), welcomes the European Commission’s Digital Single Market package of communications, released on 25 May.

    The package addresses what ETTSA considers to be important foundations that will facilitate digital transformation in the European economy. “We appreciate the Commission’s efforts to build a Digital Single Market, countering regulatory fragmentation and trying to bring down barriers to cross-border trading,” said Christoph Klenner, Secretary General of ETTSA.

  • European online travel distributors call on Italian lawmakers to suppress the OTA discrimination article in the Competition Law

    Brussels, 15 February 2016 – With the final discussion in the Senate Committee likely probably approaching this week, the European Technology and Travel Services Association (ETTSA), which represents the interests of global distribution systems ("GDSs") and online travel agencies ("OTAs"), today called on the Italian Government and Parliament to comply with EU competition law by suppressing the new Italian Competition Law article, discriminatory against OTAs, which introduces the nullity of ‘rate parity’ clauses.

    Brussels, 14 September 2015 - The European Technology & Travel Services Association (ETTSA), the association representing Global Distribution Services (GDS) and online travel agents, has filed a formal complaint with the European Commission against Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Swiss and Brussels Airlines, claiming a breach by these carriers of key provisions of the EU's Code of Conduct on computerised reservation systems (CRS).

  • European Commission: Results of the first European inquiry among citizens about their holiday plans 2009

    Over 27,000 randomly selected citizens aged 15 and over, were interviewed in February 2009 in the 27 EU Member States. For the first time the Commission has done such an extensive survey, which offers to all tourism stakeholders a wealth of information, presented analytically by country and demographic categories. At least 50% of EU citizens travel each year, in the majority of the EU countries this percentage is even higher, and nearly three-quarters of citizens take at least one trip per annum.
